How to Configure a D-Link Router

!±8± How to Configure a D-Link Router

Have you recently purchased a new D-link router to add to your computer system? In these current times, most households have more than one computer and many use wireless internet connects to surf the web. Setting these devices up are not an overly difficult task, although at times, the cable or broadband company you use might have specifics you need to take into consideration. This will be a brief tutorial which is the most common way to configure a D-link router.

Before you begin, ensure you have all the proper supplies needed such as cables, power source and the installation manual and disk as well as a power outlet. Also ensure that the cable modem is unplugged. Make sure your computer is turned off prior to installing (many times newer routers may auto configure upon restart).

Please follow these steps for your D-link router setup:

Take the Ethernet cable that is connected from the modem to your computer and unplug it from the computer. Plug that into the WAN port of the router. If this is a new set up, and it is not connected to a PC than go from the cable modems' Ethernet port to the router's wan port. If you wish to connect to a PC, take another Ethernet cable and go from the D-link router to the port in your PC. If you are using all wireless, you do not need to do this step.

Once the connection from the cable modem to the router is connected, plug both the router and the modem back in and restart your computer. Hopefully you will see the router LED lights blinking meaning it is working and the d-link router setup is correct, as in they are speaking to each other.

After your computer is back on you will need to configure the d-link router to set up all your configurations. Open Internet Explorer or your favorite web browser, and type in the generic IP address of 192.168.0.1. Check your user manual it will give you the first time login details.

From here, you will want to create a username and password, as well as make sure your firmware is current. If you are using wireless, make sure to set up your SSID and be sure to create a unique name for your router. Make sure you enable encryption so people not within your household can not use your wireless.

You may want to take other measures when you do your d-link router setup such as parental control, firewall, and even if also only allow certain computers (using a MAC address) access to your network.
